Le réacteur No 2 est tombé en panne juste après le décollage de Los Angeles. L'équipage décida de continuer sa route pour Londres Heathrow. Comme l'avion n'a été autorisé que pour une altitude de croisière inférieure à celle demandée, l'avion est tombé en manque de carburant et a dû atterrir à Manchester. L'attitude de l'équipage a été soutenue par la direction de BA. Le 25 février, l'équipage du vol du même avion de Singapour à Londres du prendre la même décision et l'avion arriva à Londres Heathrow sans incident.

The aircraft No 2 engine surged and suffered internal damage just after take-off from Los Angeles for London Heathrow and the crew shut it down.The crew decided to continue to London. Because it was cleared for a lower transatlantic flight level then requested, , the aircraft suffered a fuel shortage and had to divert into Manchester. BA supported its crew's decision. On 25 February a crew flying the same aircraft also had to shut an engine down, this time in the cruise from Singapore to London, and the crew again elected to continue. This time they landed without further incident at their destination.
